I’ve been reading this book every year or so now for over a decade, ever since I picked it up in a second-hand bookshop as a teenager (back before eBay, back before the internet).
The last time I read it I found the ending – Connie being cut off from the future – more devastating that I had before; before I had concentrated on the Utopia, the building blocks for the future, so that that stuck in my mind as a positive, and the ending didn’t affect me so much.
Now, I found the whole thing devastating, because we’ve already lost. We’ve missed the point where we could have changed things for the better, to end up with the future of Mouth-of-Mattapoisett. Now, we have a boot stamping on a human face, forever.
